4TH ANNUAL ARE CONFERENCE

STRIVING FOR TRUE PRAXIS TO RECLAIM PUBLIC EDUCATION

The conference, which is to be held on May 15, 2010, in San Diego, CA (Lincoln High School), will consist of workshops on a multitude of areas related to education. There will also be cultural presentations, as well as tables of information and literature from dozens of organizations will be on display. The keynote speakers of the conference will be the historian and one of the founders of Chicano Studies, Rodolfo Acuña; hip-hop artist/journalist and Green Party 2008 Vice Presidential Candidate, Rosa Clemente; and survivor of the brutal military overthrow of the President Allende of Chile and today UCSD professor and social justice activist, Cecilia Ubilla.

The A.R.E. conference’s goals are not limited to just “enlightening” those attending to new ideas, but to move them to forming “core groups of teacher-activists”, who in turned will form broad “progressive associations”, which will eventually lead to a “mass movement of teachers” joining other sectors of society in a struggle for total change here in the United States and around the world.

The building of this movement, A.R.E. believes, will require that today’s schools become sites of democratic struggle and centers for social justice organizers. This will necessitate that we uphold and give legitimacy to grassroots educators and intellectuals –the workers and community leaders. These people’s leaders have a wealth of knowledge and hold in their experience many of the answers and solutions to ending the problems facing Raza communities and other minorities: poverty, violence, ignorance, drug abuse, gentrification, and environmental injustice. As Educators we know that only by learning from the experiences of the workers and the community, can we provide an education that is relevant to the lives of our students and build upon the knowledge that they bring into our classrooms.

A.R.E. calls on all educators to break out of the parameters imposed upon us by an unjust educational system. Freeing ourselves from the chains of an oppression-centered education is what the A.R.E. conferences are all about. Join on this journey towards liberation; attend this year’s A.R.E. conference.

About Ideas

I.D.E.A.S. is an organization on campus that serves as a support group for AB-540 students, students who don’t get financial aid due to their immigration legal status or because they are from out of state. We believe that education is a right that should be granted to all individual regardless of their legal status. As an organization we focus on creating ways by which AB-540 students can continue the difficult task of getting an education.

Currently we are working on a fundraising event that will help pay for our books the upcoming semesters. This event will consist of a silent arts and crafts auction, music, dance, poetry and more! Since we are only asking for suggested donations at the door, and most of the funds will come from what we sell, we need to have a great amount of people who will be interested in buying the art at the event.

As educators this is what we need from you:

1. Announce the event: The Art of Persistence: An Unstoppable Dream: Friday May 14th @ The Saville Theatre, San Diego City College, from 6pm-9:30pm $5-10 suggested donation, to all your classes, families and friends who support our cause.

2. Invite people to participate: People from the group are working on the art pieces but we need more people to donate their work. Encourage your students, friends and family to donate art, jewelry, pottery, photography or anything else they think people might be willing to buy at the auction.

3. Encourage AB-540 students in your classes to get involve: Part of this event will consist of telling our stories as means to make our voices heard. There are thousands of AB-540 students in California alone but unfortunately our voices have been silent for what seems like an eternity. We wish to take this opportunity to tell people the reasons why we are here (in this country) as means of creating tolerance among those who oppose to us getting an education. Casually tell your student that if they are AB-540 students and wish to participate by telling their stories, they can attend the I.D.E.A.S. meeting on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30pm in room A-15 to get involve with the event.

4. Where to drop the Donations: Tell your students that they can take their donations directly to the group on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30pm in room A-15, or by arrangement by contacting Sonia Franko at: (619)381-8875 or at sfranco06@yahoo.com

AND DENOUNCE THE NEW SB 1070 LAW

San Diego, CA - On Monday April 26, 2010, community organizations from throughout San Diego will come together for a vigil in solidarity with the people of Arizona, and unite their voices with those who reject the recently signed Arizona state law SB 1070. This vigil is being convened at the Federal Building in Downtown San Diego with a call by the Raza Rights Coalition and its member collectives in order to reject the approval of a law that has been clearly designed to criminalize and punish the working people of Arizona.

"It is truly sad to witness the lack of political will on the part of the Obama administration in the effort to move on immigration reform, a reality that has motivated the extreme right wing in state of Arizona to promote and legalize the violation of civil and human rights," stated Adriana Jasso, coordinator of the Raza Rights Coalition in San Diego. Communities around the country, and most recently in Arizona, have been witness to how the Obama administration has provided operational funds to policies which have terrible consequences such as family separation. The most recent operation in the state of Arizona was the largest in the history of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) - an operation that mobilized over 800 agents in four different locations across the state. This operation is clearly part of the strategy of the Obama administration, which continues to concentrate all of its efforts on raids, arrests and deportations.

"Every community across the country must speak out, mobilize and reject SB 1070 which was just been signed into law by the governor of Arizona. It is time to be a part of history, and in an organized fashion, resist these terrible attacks that our communities face on a daily basis..." concludes Adriana Jasso. The empty promises of change and total lack of political will from politicians at the federal level can not, and must not be the source of our communities sinking further into fear and the marginalization. The initiative for profound and definitive change must originate from our communities that suffer daily the consequences of these repressive policies. Furthermore, it should be noted that these policies have been promoted by both Democrats and Republicans.

San Diego, CA - El día lunes, 26 de abril de 2010 en un acto de solidaridad con el pueblo de Arizona y en denuncia a la nueva ley estatal SB 1070, organizaciones comunitarias en San Diego llevarán a cabo una vigilia en el edificio federal localizado en el centro de San Diego. La Coalición Pro Derechos de la Raza, sus colectivos y la comunidad en general unen su voz para repudiar la aprobación de una ley que claramente ha sido diseñada para castigar y criminalizar al pueblo trabajador de Arizona.

"Es verdaderamente lamentable ver como la falta de voluntad política por parte de la administración de Obama hacia la reforma migratoria ha provocado que la extrema derecha en el estado de Arizona promuevan y legalicen la violación a los derechos civiles y humanos" afirmó Adriana Jasso, coordinadora de la Coalición Pro Derechos de la Raza en San Diego. Comunidades en varias partes del país y curiosamente recientemente en Arizona, han sido testigos de cómo la administración de Obama se ha enfocado en otorgar fondos a operativos los cuales tienen lamentables resultados como la separación familiar. El operativo mas reciente en el estado de Arizona fue el operativo mas grande en la historia de la agencia de ICE que empleó a más de 800 efectivos en cuatro diferentes puntos del estado. 40th CHICANO PARK DAY CELEBRATION

Organized by the Chicano Park Steering Committee

The 40tth Annual Chicano Park Day to be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, in historic Chicano Park, located in the Barrio Logan community, south of downtown San Diego. This family event is free and open to the public.

Established by Chicano activists on April 22, 1970, Chicano Park has received international recognition as a major public art site for its commanding mural paintings of the past and present struggle of Mexican and Chicano history.

Visitors to Chicano Park Day will experience traditional music and dance, including one of the most beautiful performances of Aztec Indigenous dance, coordinated by Toltecas en Aztlán. Other dance groups as well as musical acts and speakers are featured on two stages.

For over three years, the community of Chaco Rio, New Mexico, in the Diné (Navajo) Nation, has been blockading entry to the site of a proposed 1,500 megawatt coal-fired power plant. Desert Rock, a project of Sithe Global and the Diné Power Authority, would be the third coal plant within a 20-mile radius in a region already suffering from extreme levels of toxic emissions.

Elouise Brown, a Diné (Navajo) traditionalist and president of the Dooda Desert Rock committee, will embark on an 11-day speaking tour of California to speak about dangers posed by the coal industry, thenexploitation of indigenous land by energy companies, and the ongoing struggle to prevent the Desert Rock plant from ever existing. Her presentation will include three short films.

Mexico: Travel Alert relating to the 2009-H1N1 influenza outbreak: Lifted May 15, 2009. The Department of State wishes to inform U.S. citizens traveling to and residing in Mexico that on May 15 2009, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted its recommendation that American citizens avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico. As a result of the CDC's decision, the State Department's Travel Alert relating to the 2009-H1N1 influenza outbreak is no longer in effect.

Mexico: Security August 20, 2009. The Department of State has issued this Travel Alert to update security information for U.S. citizens traveling to and living in Mexico. It supersedes the Travel Alert for Mexico dated February 20, 2009, and expires on February 20, 2010.

While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year (including tens of thousands who cross the land border every day for study, tourism or business), violence in the country has increased. It is imperative that travelers understand the risks of travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and who to contact if one becomes a crime victim. Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where prostitution and drug dealing might occur, can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable.

Recent violent attacks have caused the U.S. Embassy to urge U.S. citizens to delay unnecessary travel to parts of Michoacán and Chihuahua (see details below) and advise U.S. citizens residing or traveling in those areas to exercise extreme caution. Drug cartels and associated criminal elements have retaliated violently against individuals who speak out against them or whom they otherwise view to be a threat to their organization, regardless of the individuals’ citizenship. These attacks include the abduction and murder of two resident U.S. citizens in Chihuahua in July, 2009.

Violence Along the U.S. - Mexico Border Mexican drug cartels are engaged in violent conflict - both among themselves and with Mexican security services - for control of narcotics trafficking routes along the U.S.-Mexico border. In order to combat violence, the government of Mexico has deployed military troops in various parts of the country. U.S. citizens should cooperate fully with official checkpoints when traveling on Mexican highways.

Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades. Large firefights have taken place in towns and cities across Mexico, but occur mostly in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City, Monterrey and Ciudad Juarez. During some of these incidents, U.S. citizens have been trapped and temporarily prevented from leaving the area...

A number of areas along the border are experiencing rapid growth in the rates of many types of crime. Robberies, homicides, petty thefts, and carjackings have all increased over the last year across Mexico generally, with notable spikes in Tijuana and northern Baja California. Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana and Nogales are among the cities which have experienced public shootouts during daylight hours in shopping centers and other public venues. Criminals have followed and harassed U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles in border areas including Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, and Tijuana.

U.S. citizens are urged to be alert to safety and security concerns when visiting the border region. Criminals are armed with a wide array of sophisticated weapons. In some cases, assailants have worn full or partial police or military uniforms and have used vehicles that resemble police vehicles. While most crime victims are Mexican citizens, the uncertain security situation poses serious risks for U.S. citizens as well. U.S. citizen victims of crime in Mexico are urged to contact the consular section of the nearest U.S. consulate or Embassy for advice and assistance. With a growing economic crisis, the U.S. empire is waging an even larger scale war on the world’s poor to keep capitalism afloat, while eliminating many essential services making it more expensive and practically unaffordable to obtain healthcare, education, housing, and even making it a crime to work if you’re an undocumented worker in the U.S. For this reason, Unión del Barrio and the International Action Center have joined efforts with the Detroit based U.S./Cuba Labor Exchange and the World Federation of Trade Unions to host a national tour of Latin American labor leaders from Cuba, Peru and Costa Rica to Southern California.

One of the central themes in this tour is the role of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), an alliance of Latin American countries that have moved towards continental unity with the goal of freeing themselves from the domination of U.S. and European imperialist policies that have held back their economic development for several centuries. Already, the ALBA nations have initiated popular literacy campaigns; free health care programs aimed at the poorest communities, and have made substantial improvements in working conditions as well as raised wages for the working class. These measures, and more to come, have only been made possible by breaking with the “neo-liberal” policies of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and creating a Regional Block of Power and alternative Economic Institutions such as the Bank of the South.

The Chiapas Support Committee of Oakland, California announces a Human Rights Delegation to Chiapas Mexico. We hope you will join us for this in-depth exploration of how corporate globalization is affecting indigenous communities constructing autonomy (self-governance).

Delegates will receive briefings from Mexican non-profits working in indigenous communities. We will also visit Oventik, an EZLN Caracol, and its Good Government Junta to learn about autonomous governance. We will visit San Pedro Polhó, an autonomous municipality that provides food and shelter to 6,000 internally displaced Zapatistas. Next, we will visit the Caracol of La Garrucha, located in the canyons of the Lacandón Jungle and then continue on to our partner municipality of San Manuel, located in a beautiful river valley east of the city of Ocosingo.

This delegation provides an opportunity to visit and interact with civilian Zapatista communities constructing autonomy and resisting corporate exploitation. Delegates can shop for clothing, jewelry, CDs, coffee or videos in the community coops. While in San Cristobal, there will also be time for shopping and entertainment. HUMAN RIGHTS DELEGATION to CHIAPAS, March 21-28, 2010

The Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) rose up in arms against the government of Mexico on January 1, 1994 and took control of large expanses of land owned by cattle ranchers. Thirteen days later, the Zapatistas laid down their weapons and declared a truce. The government also declared a truce, but prepared for war. In February 1995, the Mexican army entered "Zapatista territory" and set up military bases and camps close to indigenous communities. The army has never left and the soldiers remain there to this day. The territory claimed by the Zapatistas and militarized by the army is known as a "conflict zone."

Since the Zapatistas put down their weapons in 1994, they began to construct another world, characterized by regional self-government, collective economic projects, autonomous education and health care. This delegation takes place six and a half years after the Zapatistas renamed their 5 government centers Caracoles (shells) and created 5 autonomous regional governing bodies, called Good Government Boards, or Juntas; and nearly five years after launching the Other Campaign, an effort to unite anti-capitalist movements into a political force within Mexico.

The indigenous peoples of Chiapas confront a design by multilateral organizations such as the World Bank to re-conquer indigenous territory for exploitation by transnational corporations. The Zapatistas live in resistance to the Mexican government and are committed to resist corporate acquisition of their lands and natural resources. They say they will not permit the Plan Puebla Panama (now renamed the Mesoamerica Project) within their territory. That project threatens the people of Chiapas with eviction from their land in order to exploit the natural resources and construct hydroelectric dams, soft drink bottling plants, upscale tourist facilities, oil and mining exploration and mono-crop export agriculture.

Getting there, cost, etc.

Delegates will arrive in Tuxtla Gutiérrez by plane and then travel by bus or taxi to the colonial city of San Cristobal de las Casas. We will assemble at a hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas on March 21. Several days later, the delegation travels into the canyons of the Lacandón Jungle to spend two or three nights in indigenous communities. Conditions there are like rough camping and require both a sleeping bag and a hammock. (Accommodation can be made for one or two delegates with special needs.)

Cost of the delegation is US $500.00. This does NOT include airfare nor bus transportation to and from San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. It DOES include most food, lodging and ground transportation to the communities. It ALSO includes a donation for each community we visit, an honorarium for each NGO briefing we receive, delegation expenses and educational materials. We provide each delegation with an experienced group leader and translator. Delegation dates are March 21 to March 28, 2010. We will prepare a day-to-day itinerary and will send it to all those who express interest in the delegation when it is ready.

Who is the Chiapas Support Committee?

The Chiapas Support Committee is a grassroots nonprofit organization founded in 1998. All of us are volunteers. Our mission is to provide information about the human rights situation in Mexico in the Bay Area and beyond, and to provide material aid to victims of human rights abuse. Therefore, we support indigenous and campesino (peasant) organizations, autonomous communities and non-governmental organizations in Chiapas. We certify human rights observers, organize delegations, fund autonomous projects and process applications for the Zapatista Language School. We have a partnership with the autonomous municipality of San Manuel, Chiapas. Simply put, we are your connection to Chiapas.

Conditions in Chiapas

As described above, the areas we visit in Chiapas are in a "conflict zone." There are military bases and paramilitary groups within the zone. The EZLN maintains its own army, although it does not use its weapons offensively. The conflict is almost entirely between unarmed Zapatista communities and the paramilitary groups, sometimes accompanied by local police. Violence has not been directed at or against foreign visitors. Between 1998 and 2000, the Mexican government expelled some foreign visitors from Mexico for "interfering" in internal Mexican politics because they were working in Zapatista communities, but changed its policy at the beginning of 2001 and there have been no problems for foreign visitors since then. Nevertheless, it is a zone of conflict and, therefore, violence is not entirely predictable. Delegates travel at their own risk.

Valentina and Julieta will introduce students to the Mixtec culture and history in Oaxaca and in San Diego and present one of the most important experiences of a migrant Mexican Indigenous community. The Mixtecs have preserved and re-created cultural and social links between their people at home and their people in the US, in spite of cultural and national borders.

Valentina Torres was born in the Mexican State of Oaxaca and belongs to the 2,500 year-old Mixtec culture, one of the oldest and most extraordinary original cultures of Mexico. Like many other Mixtecs, Valentina migrated to San Diego. She has worked to improve both her community in San Diego and the one she comes from in Oaxaca. She is one of the first women in her community to graduate from San Diego State University. For several years she has been the director of the Mixtec Cultural Exchange Program. In this program, Mixtec children and adults learn English and Spanish and in exchange, they teach the Mixtec languages to the student volunteers from UCSD, SDSU, USD, City College and other schools. Valentina is the co-founder of Familia Indigena Unida, a grassroots organization that promotes community, self-sufficiency, civic and reproductive rights and cultural preservation among migrant Mixtec families. She serves as the president of Ñuu Saa Committee for the Development of Santa Maria Natividad, a small rural village located in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Julieta González is a Mixtec from Santa Maria Natividad, a small rural village located in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. She, like thousands of other fellow indigenous people from the state of Oaxaca, made the painful journey to migrate to the U.S. in order to escape the widespread poverty and discrimination present in their communities. Julieta is a leader of one of the largest Mixtec communities in the U.S., located in the neighborhood of Linda Vista, San Diego. She graduated from San Diego State University with a B.A. in International Business with a specialization in Finance, with a perspective of Latin America Studies. Julieta is currently the coordinator for the Mixtec Kids program. She has successfully empowered many Mixtec children by assisting them with their homework and encouraging them to be proud of their cultural identity and to conserve their native language and culture. Julieta serves as the secretary of Ñuu Saa Committee for the Development of Santa María Natividad. She is also the co-founder of Familia Indígena Unida.

THE FILM

Carmen works the graveyard shift in one of Tijuana’s maquiladoras, the multinationally-owned factories that came to Mexico for its cheap labor. After making television components all night, Carmen comes home to a shack she built out of recycled garage doors, in a neighborhood with no sewage lines or electricity. She suffers from kidney damage and lead poisoning from her years of exposure to toxic chemicals. She earns six dollars a day. But Carmen is not a victim. She is a dynamic young woman, busy making a life for herself and her children.

As Carmen and a million other maquiladora workers produce televisions, electrical cables, toys, clothes, batteries and IV tubes, they weave the very fabric of life for consumer nations. They also confront labor violations, environmental devastation and urban chaos -- life on the frontier of the global economy. In MAQUILAPOLIS, Carmen and her colleague Lourdes reach beyond the daily struggle for survival to organize for change: Carmen takes a major television manufacturer to task for violating her labor rights. Lourdes pressures the government to clean up a toxic waste dump left behind by a departing factory.

As they work for change, the world changes too: a global economic crisis and the availability of cheaper labor in China begin to pull the factories away from Tijuana, leaving Carmen, Lourdes and their colleagues with an uncertain future.

THE PROCESS

To create MAQUILAPOLIS, the filmmakers brought together factory workers in Tijuana and community organizations in Mexico and the U.S. to collaborate on a film that depicts globalization through the eyes of the women who live on its leading edge. The factory workers who appear in the film have been involved in every stage of production, from planning to shooting, from scripting to outreach. This collaborative process breaks with the traditional documentary practice of dropping into a location, shooting and leaving with the "goods," which would only repeat the pattern of the maquiladora itself. The process embraces subjectivity as a value and a goal. It merges artmaking with community development to ensure that the film's voice will be truly that of its subjects.

THE OUTREACH CAMPAIGN

We are currently seeking funding to implement a binational Community Outreach Campaign, designed and implemented collaboratively with stakeholder organizations in the U.S. and Mexico. The campaign utilizes a high-profile public television broadcast, top tier film festivals and community screenings of the film to create meaningful social change around the issues of globalization, social and environmental justice and fair trade. Our outreach team includes dedicated activists on both sides of the border, mediamakers commited to social change, and most importantly a group of women factory workers struggling to bring about positive change in their world.

About the movie

"Papers" is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status.

There are approximately 2 million undocumented children who were born outside the U.S. and raised in this country. These are young people who were educated in American schools, hold American values, know only the U.S. as home and yet risk deportation to countries they may not even remember.

65,000 undocumented students graduate every year from high school without “papers” and the door to their future slams shut. It is against the law to work or drive. It is difficult, if not impossible in some states, to attend college. Currently, there is no path to citizenship for these young people.

Graham Street Productions produced this film in partnership with Film Action Oregon. We are working in collaboration with the youth who want to tell their stories as well as community organizations around the country who are working to change immigration policy on behalf of these young people.

Graham Street Productions is producing this film in association with El Grupo Juvenil (the "Papers" Youth Crew). These youth producers are actively involved in all aspects of the production.

When the women left their homes that May morning in 2006, they never imagined the horrific experience that lay ahead of them. During a police operation in response to protests by activists from a local peasant organization in San Salvador Atenco, Mexico, over 45 women were arrested without explanation. Dozens of them were subjected to physical, psychological and sexual violence by the police officers who arrested them. Years later, they are still waiting for justice. None of the officials responsible for their abuse have been adequately held accountable.

November 16, 2009 - San Diego, CA Critically-acclaimed Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company will present Storyteller/Performance Artist/Def Poetry Jam Performer Robert Farid Karimi in his hip hop play self (the remix) as its next full production, running from February 25 March 21, 2010, at The 10th Avenue Theatre in Downtown San Diego. Press opening will take place on Friday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m.

Directed by Ellen Sebastian Chang, self (the remix) mixes together stories, movement, and music to tell the tale of an American child of Iranian and Guatemalan immigrants growing up in California in the 1970s and 1980s in the shadow of the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Robert Farid Karimi, accompanied by a soundscape created by DJ D Double, tells a "remixed" autobiographical tale of a boy struggling to learn about manhood, nationhood, and neighborhood with the voices and music of his environment helping him along.

"As Robert likes to say, 'The play includes issues of mixed race, issues of Iran, and issues of Michael Jackson,'" laughs Mo`olelo's Artistic Director Seema Sueko. "We are extremely excited to present Robert's work here in San Diego. His writing is poignant and funny, and his onstage talent is immense as he transforms into 23 characters and takes the audience on a journey through schoolyards, churches and discos."

Cherrie L. Moraga is a playwright, poet, and essayist whose plays and publications have received national recognition. She is the co-editor of the groundbreaking This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, the author of *Loving in the War Years: Lo Que Nunca Pasa Por Sus Labios*, *Waiting in the Wings: Portrait of a Queer Motherhood*, several collections of plays, and *A Xicana Codex of Changing Consciousness*, which will be published by Duke University Press in 2011.

In 2007, Moraga won the United States Artists Rockefeller Fellowship for Literature. She is currently an Artist in Residence at Stanford University. Victor Hugo Lopez will speak about how the human rights situation in Mexican state of Chiapas has deteriorated rapidly in recent months, including an attack on a fellow lawyer from the Fray Bartolome de las Casas Human Rights Center (frayba.org.mx) in September. As popular organizations wage peaceful struggles against paramilitary violence, tourism projects that will displace campesinos, and illegal land takeovers, Victor Hugo Lopez and his colleagues at the Fray Bartolome Center are one of the few reliable sources on human rights abuses. Under attack from paramilitary groups, local PRI affiliates, the army, and state and federal governments, the Fray Bartolome Center produces daily reports on human rights, defends cases in court and supports indigenous communities under attack. During his talk, Victor Hugo Lopez will discuss the current human rights situation in Chiapas and Mexico, as well as the prospects for political changes in 2010.

The Fray Bartolome de las Casas Human Rights Center was founded in1989 by the renowned liberation theologian, peace activist, and Catholic bishop Samuel Ruiz Garcia. Independent of any political party, ideology or religious creed, the Fray Bartolome Center 's mission is to be “at the service of the poor, the marginalized, and the organized peoples who seek to better their socio-economic and political situation.”

Its outstanding work has led the Fray Bartolome Center to obtain international recognition as one of the premier organizations of its kind in all of Mexico. While cause for celebration, its service to the people of Chiapas is all the more necessary given the increasingly repressive situation present in Chiapas' indigenous communities. In the past months activists have been assassinated, campesinos have been summarily arrested as political prisoners, paramilitary groups have violently dispossessed indigenous communities of their collective lands, and the Human Rights Center itself has been the target of attacks both in the media and through the barrel of a gun.

This increasingly tense and mistakenly labeled “low-intensity”conflict develops in the context of the coming 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Political and economic elites, scared that “something” might erupt, have increasingly reacted to this fear by using the very repression that could make such an uprising more probable.

Come hear Victor Hugo Lopez speak of this complex situation and the role of the Fray Bartolome de las Casas Human Rights Center in promoting the indivisibility of human rights, respect for cultural diversity and the right of autonomous self-determination, integral justice as a prerequisite for peace, and the development of a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and reconciliation.

The goal is to build bridges between the community and campus, engage in cultural awareness, and education and consciousness-raising about social and political issues, and to sign-up students to participate in the activities of the participating organizations for class credit through the City College Service Learning Program. We would like to invite your organization to be a part of this event. Each group will have 10 minutes to present a description of their organization and activities and students will be encouraged to ask questions. Together we hope to build lasting relationships and a joint commitment to social justice and community service between the Chicana/o Studies students, faculty and the participating organizations. Workshop this Sunday on healing and diabetes prevention

Greetings,

I am writing to invite you to a workshop about the healing properties of vegetables and herbs and about diet and life style which prevents and can reverse diabetes.

The workshop will be this Sunday, March 21st beginning at 3pm at the farm La Milpa Organica in Escondido. The farm is a beautiful place for families and children, all children are welcome to come!

The workshop will be presented by two women, Margarita and Maribel. They both work in the farm and are promotoras for good health through a natural diet.

This will be a bilingual workshop in Spanish & English

Please bring food to share for a potluck dinner after the workshop.

The farm is just off the 15 freeway, exit Deer Springs Rd/Mountain Meadow Parkway, and go south on Centre City Pkwy, then left on Protea Gardens Rd. (see below for address and map)

Mexico: Travel Alert relating to the 2009-H1N1 influenza outbreak: Lifted May 15, 2009. The Department of State wishes to inform U.S. citizens traveling to and residing in Mexico that on May 15 2009, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted its recommendation that American citizens avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico. As a result of the CDC's decision, the State Department's Travel Alert relating to the 2009-H1N1 influenza outbreak is no longer in effect.

Mexico: Security August 20, 2009. The Department of State has issued this Travel Alert to update security information for U.S. citizens traveling to and living in Mexico. It supersedes the Travel Alert for Mexico dated February 20, 2009, and expires on February 20, 2010.

While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year (including tens of thousands who cross the land border every day for study, tourism or business), violence in the country has increased. It is imperative that travelers understand the risks of travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and who to contact if one becomes a crime victim. Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where prostitution and drug dealing might occur, can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable.

Recent violent attacks have caused the U.S. Embassy to urge U.S. citizens to delay unnecessary travel to parts of Michoacán and Chihuahua (see details below) and advise U.S. citizens residing or traveling in those areas to exercise extreme caution. Drug cartels and associated criminal elements have retaliated violently against individuals who speak out against them or whom they otherwise view to be a threat to their organization, regardless of the individuals’ citizenship. These attacks include the abduction and murder of two resident U.S. citizens in Chihuahua in July, 2009.

Violence Along the U.S. - Mexico Border Mexican drug cartels are engaged in violent conflict - both among themselves and with Mexican security services - for control of narcotics trafficking routes along the U.S.-Mexico border. In order to combat violence, the government of Mexico has deployed military troops in various parts of the country. U.S. citizens should cooperate fully with official checkpoints when traveling on Mexican highways.

Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades. Large firefights have taken place in towns and cities across Mexico, but occur mostly in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City, Monterrey and Ciudad Juarez. During some of these incidents, U.S. citizens have been trapped and temporarily prevented from leaving the area...

A number of areas along the border are experiencing rapid growth in the rates of many types of crime. Robberies, homicides, petty thefts, and carjackings have all increased over the last year across Mexico generally, with notable spikes in Tijuana and northern Baja California. Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana and Nogales are among the cities which have experienced public shootouts during daylight hours in shopping centers and other public venues. Criminals have followed and harassed U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles in border areas including Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, and Tijuana.

U.S. citizens are urged to be alert to safety and security concerns when visiting the border region. Criminals are armed with a wide array of sophisticated weapons. In some cases, assailants have worn full or partial police or military uniforms and have used vehicles that resemble police vehicles. While most crime victims are Mexican citizens, the uncertain security situation poses serious risks for U.S. citizens as well. U.S. citizen victims of crime in Mexico are urged to contact the consular section of the nearest U.S. consulate or Embassy for advice and assistance. Set in the heart of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Doe Boy tells the story of Hunter, a young Native American whose teen angst is compounded by his confusing cultural identity. Though his mother is a full Cherokee, his father Hank is not and, to make matters worse, Hunter has hemophilia, long considered a white man's disease among Native Americans. Feeling himself to be an outsider even in his Cherokee community and unable to physically connect with others his age because of his hemophilia, Hunter begins to act out, further driving a wedge between himself, his family, and his community. Both a thoughtful coming of age drama and a meaningful look at the often contradictory and confusing notions of cultural identity in modern America,DOE BOY is both entertaining and thought provoking.

The 44,000 electric workers who were fired a few weeks ago will try to take back their jobs in central Mexico, clashes with the military are expected.

SME calls for national strike

By Mexico Solidarity Network The Electrical Workers Union (SME) called for a general strike on November 11 to fight the closure of Central Light and Power (LFC) by the Calderon administration last month. More than 44,000 workers lost their jobs in the surprise Saturday night police action that tried to abolish Mexico's largest democratic union. Since the closure of LFC, Calderon has faced increasing pressure to reconsider, both on popular and legal fronts. Telephone and university workers agreed to join the one day strike, and thousands of students from the National Autonomous University are expected to take an active role. Campesino organizations are also answering the call.

Last week more than 25,000 SME workers filed papers with federal courts asking for a restraining order against the closure. In a series of legal set-backs for the Calderon administration, a federal judge awarded a temporary restraining order on October 30, followed by a permanent ruling on November 6. A group of 500 volunteer lawyers also filed papers challenging the constitutionality of the closure. And the Federal Labor Board refused to emit a final decision on the termination of the labor contract between LFC and the SME.

Despite increasing pressure on workers to accept severance deals before mid November, most union members are resisting. As many as 34,000 workers from a workforce of 44,000 (which includes many salaried and office workers) signed legal complaints. In addition, the electrical system in central Mexico appears to be falling apart. Workers from the Federal Electric Commission (CFE) are trying to assume the responsibilities of former LFC workers, but much of the LFC technology is more than 50 years old and patched together haphazardly due to decapitalization over the past two decades by the federal government. Increasing power outages are leaving tens of thousands of workers unemployed and there is a distinct possibility of a general failure in coming weeks.

Despite a months-long media campaign by the federal government in conjunction with Mexico's television duopoly, Televisa and TV Azteca, SME workers are gradually winning the battle for public opinion. Calderon claimed the federal government was subsidizing LFC with more than US$3 billion annually, but the financial situation turns out to be much more complicated. LFC is a government business and the gradual decapitalization over two decades left the company without sufficient resources to generate electrical power for some 25 million people living in central Mexico. LFC was forced to purchase power generated by the CFE at high rates, then resell the power to companies at about one-third the initial cost. In addition, many politically connected companies and federal government agencies, including President Calderon's home at los Pinos, did not pay for electricity.

The exhibit is composed of a series of powerful photographs by award-winning journalist and documentary photographer David Bacon and moving narratives that explore the unique challenges facing California’s indigenous Mexican communities. It documents the consequences of economic dislocation from Mexico and the challenges these dislocated communities face in California.

But the exhibit also celebrates the culture and community spirit that sustains these migrants who are agents of change, questioning unfair work conditions, working for better housing and making critical decisions about their community.

Estimates indicate that over half of California’s farm worker population is comprised of Mexican migrants. Speaking several languages other than Spanish, these communities of Mixteco, Triqui, Zapoteco, Chatino, and Purepecha remain marginalized and with limited access to safe, affordable housing and social services.

This traveling exhibition is a partnership between David Bacon and two non-profit organizaions, California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc., and the Binational Front of Indigenous Organizations . The exhibition is partially funded by the Ford Foundation. Additional support for the project was provided by the California Council of The Humanities and The California Endowment.

Edith López Ovalle is a 25-year-old artist and a member of Hijos por la Identidad y la Justicia contra el Olvido y el Silencio (HIJOS) where she works with the Committee on Art and Politics. HIJOS is a member of the Otra Campaña and works around questions of human rights, particularly the death and disappearance of social actors. The parents of most of the members of HIJOS were political prisoners, and many were killed or disappeared in the 60s, 70s and 80s. HIJOS is a multi-national organization founded in Argentina and with chapters in Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, Chile and Mexico. HIJOS works at the cultural level with innovative public events like "escraches" that draw attention to human rights violators.

David Schmidt of C.A.F.E. is a great-grandchild of immigrants from Russia, and has been involved in urban and rural indigenous communities in Mexico over the last decade, and has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of lopsided trade policies and neoliberal economics on the poorest communities in the world.

David will present a critical view of the current discussion of "immigration reform", in light of the unfair trade policies—pushed by the U.S. Government itself—which force people to migrate. Unless the US drastically increases the ability to legally immigrate to the US and drastically changes US trade policies like NAFTA which push massive migration, the fundamental problems facing immigrants will continue.
