Videos showing the power of the earthquake:

UPDATE:

First, of all I want to say THANK YOU to everyone that donated to the community of El Mayor, Baja California, Mexico. The following is an update with attached photos of the community and the surrounding areas. The other link to pictures are from the group in LA the photographer is Joel Garcia.

Our group left around noon on Saturday and arrived in the community. I spoke to the Tribal Chief and he said his son could direct us to other houses nearby and further East that don't usually receive help, in the direction of the most damage of the earthquake. So we did, we went to the community of El Faro, Mi Ranchito and finally Mosqueda, where people lost their houses due to flooding. Most of theses pictures are in the end of LA's Pictures.

El Mayor Community has a designated storage place where all the donations are being kept. The own community is distributing to their own tribe members based on a list of families and members of that family. Which was a relief when we got there. They even have a night watchers, from the own community, so that no one can steal their supplies.

I was told by many members that most of the donations were brought by people outside of the community such as: Oaxaxa and Zakamoto , which are unaffected communities of Mexicalli, also Tijuana, San Diego, Los Angeles. All donations for the most part have been non-governmental. They expressed their gratitude and assured that they do their part to make sure that they are shared with nearby elders and houses that are in between shelters.

They have been told by the government that they will know if they can go home and have running water in about 2 months; and about 6 months before everything is stable again. Most houses have been marked with an A, B or C; A: for livable space and house; B:for livable land but not house; and C: for neither livable house or land. There has been about 10 families that have been labeled C. They are in the midst of planing how, where and when will they rebuild.

They have been unable to fish in the Colorado Delta due to sinkholes that developed during the earthquake. I have been told some of them are the size of a car and are flooded. They have concern that the sulfur water is contaminating the Hardy river where they usually fish small quantities of fish to feed their families. In addition, they were informed that the Cemetery in La Puerta was affected by the cracks of the earthquake. Needless to say, that they are worried of the air quality in that area.

Everything considered we were well received by the community. Grassroots Organizers from all parts of San Diego have decided to continue making trips until their situation becomes more stable. Please see attached Flyer.

Again, Thank You if you have contributed in anyway, small or great. I will be sure to make updates after trips.

Thank You,

Estela Flores
