When the women left their homes that May morning in 2006, they never imagined the horrific experience that lay ahead of them. During a police operation in response to protests by activists from a local peasant organization in San Salvador Atenco, Mexico, over 45 women were arrested without explanation. Dozens of them were subjected to physical, psychological and sexual violence by the police officers who arrested them. Years later, they are still waiting for justice. None of the officials responsible for their abuse have been adequately held accountable.
Cuando las mujeres salieron de sus casas esa mañana de mayo del 2006, no imaginaban la terrible experiencia que iban a vivir. Durante un operativo policial frente a las protestas de activistas de una organización campesina de la localidad de San Salvador Atenco, México, más de 45 mujeres fueron detenidas sin explicación. Decenas de ellas fueron sometidas a actos de violencia física, psicológica y sexual por los agentes de policía que las detuvieron. Años después, siguen esperando a que se haga justicia. Ninguno de los agentes responsables de los abusos ha sido procesado de manera adecuada.
